"A year has gone by without any progress in the investigation into his murder," Lal Wickrematunge said today to Reporters Without Borders, on the eve of the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of his brother, Lasantha Wickrematunge, the Colombo-based Sunday Leader's well-known managing editor. It is Lal who has replaced him at the helm of investigative weekly, some of whose journalists were recently threatened.

In a letter to IMF Managing Director, Mr. Dominique Strauss-Kahn, RSF's outspoken Secretary General, Jean-François Julliard, has called on the lending body to urge the Sri Lankan government of Mahinda Rajapaksa to respect freedom of speech and rule of law as a pre-condition for the multi-billion dollar standby-arrangement currently under negotiation.

The Rajapakse government has managed to maintain its position in the World Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), as the 165th worst nation for press freedom. The only countries that ranked below Sri Lanka, such as North Korea, Eritria and Turkmenistan, are all run by dictatorships.
